Joining Merchant Navy as a Deck Officer

 



Sea of opportunity there are various types of ships but the main job of a ship is to transport goods or people from one place to another ships are responsible for transporting 96% of goods around the world and is the most important service helping the helping to keep the wheels of the global economy moving smoothly shipping is a vital link in World Trade and today it is one of the booming sectors of the industry if you join the merchant Navy you could choose to be a navigator of navigating officer also known as a deck officer 

As is with choosing any stream of education, selecting a career in Merchant Navy also requires a considerable amount of time devoted towards research so that a prospective individual is able to choose a course that best suits his needs. Some might aspire to become deck officers.


                                


A deck officer works in the execution offer a variety of tasks mainly navigation and when you wearing of the veseel handling of safety equipments on board handling of cargo communication and safety of the ship cargo and persons on board.A Deck officer starts his career as a deck Cadet. Courses During the Pre-sea training he will be prepared for the nautical disciplines and will eventually be responsible for the navigation, cargo handling maintenance and other associated duties onboard a merchant navy ships. After specified periods of intervening sea service on board a ship will progress to the rank of captain. The career in merchant navy as Deck officers is rewarding both financially and also in job satisfaction, you get to see the world, meet different people enabling you to broaden your horizons and all totally free.



since the course itself leads to graduation it should be based to pursue the course immediately after 12th standard which would give the candidate a head start over the students joining after the graduation


A Nautical Science career in academic area demands very high level of knowledge and competencies in Navigation, Seamanship, Cargo handling and Ship Operations. In non academic areas, it demands a very high level of discipline and overall growth of an officer to take up highly demanding job of a Navigating Officer aboard a modern merchant ship.

                                          

The candidate undergoes a 12 months (two semesters) residential Pre-sea training at DG approved college where he undergoes training in specialized fields like Navigation, Seamanship, Ship Construction and Ship Stability, MARPOL and Marine Engineering Knowledge. Training is also imparted in English and Human factors, teaching the cadets the importance of team work, leadership, positive attitude and interpersonal relationship. Training is also provided in workshop comprising of Carpentry, Plumbing, Machine Shop, Electrical shop and Hot-work. On successful completion of the 1 & 2 semester, Diploma in Nautical Science is awarded by the Indian Maritime University (IMU).


On completion of the pre-sea training, he undertakes the 18 months practical onboard training phase comprising semester 3, 4 & 5 of Advance Diploma in Nautical Science which is termed as Distance Learning Programme with Indian Maritime University (IMU). On successful completion of semester 3, 4 & 5, IMU will award the trainee with B.Sc in Nautical Science.



After obtaining Advance Diploma in Nautical Science, trainee are required to undergo 4 months post-sea course in any training institute (2nd Mate Function). On successful completion of the 2ndMate Function & passing the exam he will be awarded Certificate of Competency(CoC) as Second Mate Foreign Going (FG) Merchant Ship by Director General of Shipping and B.Sc. Degree in (Nautical Science) by IMU. The person holding CoC can work on any FG Merchant Ship as Second Mate.


Educational Qualifications:

Candidate should have passed in HSC (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%.

Or

Candidate possessing B.Sc. Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 60% of marks in the final year.

Or

Candidate possessing B.E./ B. Tech. Degree from I.I.T or from a college recognized by AICTE


Age Limit - Maximum 25 years of age as on 1st of January or 1st of August.

Physical Standards - Medically fit as per the standards set by M. S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.

Eyesight - Candidates have to Qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and no colour blindness

The syllabus of the course is drawn up with a view in giving broad-based marine education, with special emphasis on fundamentals of marine subjects and practical aspects of profession.

                                               


All applicants to the above 1-year Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) course leading to B.Sc (Applied Nautical Science) need to fulfill the guidelines of the Director-General of Shipping, Mumbai with regard to physical fitness. The prospective candidates are required to produce a medical fitness certificate in the prescribed format issued by a Medical Officer approved by Directorate General of Shipping.


Only unmarried candidates are eligible to apply for Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) Course.


Candidates desirous of joining these courses are advised to apply for Passport before taking admission.
